Summary
Exploring the History of Blackpool North Pier
Blackpool North Pier is a Grade II listed pleasure pier located in the English seaside resort of Blackpool. Built in 1867, it is the oldest of Blackpool's three piers and one of the few remaining timber-built piers in the country.
The pier was designed by Eugenius Birch, a notable Victorian pier engineer. It has a total length of 532 metres and is divided into three sections: the Landing Stage, the Head and the Pavilion. The Landing Stage is the entrance with a ticket office and a turnstile. The Head is the main pier, with a promenade and a central pavilion. The Pavilion is the furthest part of the pier, with a wooden deck and a café.
The pier has a long and varied history. It was the first pier in Blackpool and was originally known as the South Jetty, before being renamed the North Pier in 1872. It was extended and modernised a number of times, and in the late 19th century it was a popular attraction for day-trippers who came to enjoy the pier's music hall and variety theatre.
Today, the pier has been restored and is a popular destination for visitors. It has a range of attractions, including a Victorian-style theatre, a funfair and a range of amusements. It also offers stunning views of the Irish Sea and the Blackpool skyline.
Blackpool North Pier is an important part of the town's history and a great example of Victorian engineering. It is well worth a visit if you find yourself in Blackpool.
The North Pier is literally a stones throw from The Belmont Hotel in Blackpool.
