red vs white wine 2

I, like everyone else has been told that red wine is better for me than white wine, and like most people, until I got older, I swallowed (excuse the pun) this claim down in one big gulp.

Whilst I developed a palate for smooth luxurious reds in my quest for heath (and wealth) I cannot help but be a little excited that by quaffing down my favourite Pinot I will not be shortening my lifespan.

However, the jury is still out and the evidence is sketchy at best. I like to believe, and indeed others do too, that it is a case that they simply benefit you in different ways. Both red and white wines are good for your health, both wines improve health and both wines are beneficial when drunk in moderation.

Both wines have been shown to improve heart health but red wine has more antioxidants, is better at reducing cholesterol and helping regulate blood pressure.

Most of the benefits are based on the presence of resveratrol, a compound found in the skins of red grapes that help to fight off bacteria, fungi and UV rays.

Resveratrol appears to be the underlying reason for many of the health benefits of wine. Red wine contains more than white wine, because it is fermented with the skins.

On a diet or watching the calories? Red and White wine are neck-to-neck in calories and so are equally beneficial when it comes to weight loss.

However, and enough to put a huge tick in the red wine box for me is that red wine is the winner when it comes to anti-aging properties due containing something called polyphenols (micronutrients beneficial to health) and silicon.

The bad news for wine lovers is that non-alcoholic wines, grapes, blueberries, raspberries, bilberries, and peanuts may be just as rich in resveratrol as your favourite red tipple.

I don't know about you. . . but I think I'll stick to my deep seated belief, instilled since I was old enough to drink, that my favourite bottle of Chateauneuf de Pape will keep me young and make me slim.
